Accident News Report
Authorities responded to a multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 15 near the Harvard Road area on July 5, 2026. The collision was reported around 12:10 p.m. on northbound I-15 just south of Harvard Road. Initial reports indicated a crash involving a TSMR and a hatchback, with vehicles in the center divide and debris across the roadway. Officials reported a gray SUV in the center divide on the northbound side and a gray four-door sedan in the center divide on the southbound side. Two vehicles were also reported disabled in the number 1 lane. A silver Nissan four-door sedan was reported to have possible injured occupants in the back seat, and its doors were stuck. The incident was first classified as a traffic collision with emergency medical response en route, then briefly changed to a collision with unknown injuries before being reclassified as a collision with emergency medical response. An iPhone traffic collision alert was also received with no response from the reporting party. Fire personnel requested two air ambulances to land on the northbound side, and officials planned traffic breaks to accommodate emergency operations. The southbound number 1 lane was blocked just north of Harvard Road while the number 2 lane remained open. Authorities reported significant traffic backups in both directions, including southbound traffic backed up from mile marker 101. The county sheriff’s office was notified for coroner response. A victim was pronounced dead at 1:00 p.m. by a fire department medic from Engine 52. Officials later noted a deceased party out of a disabled vehicle at the scene. Multiple injured passengers were documented and transported to area hospitals. At least one rear passenger and a juvenile front passenger were taken to Loma Linda Medical Center, and another person was transported to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center. By about 2:30 p.m., officials reported that all southbound lanes had reopened, followed by confirmation that all lanes in the area were open. The state transportation department was notified, and two evidence tows were requested to remove involved vehicles. Tow trucks were delayed in northbound traffic and were authorized to use the shoulder to reach the scene. The crash remains under investigation by authorities.

What California law says after a car accident
Who may bring a wrongful death claim in California
When a collision results in death, California law allows specific family members to bring a wrongful death claim. The categories are defined by statute and generally include a surviving spouse or domestic partner, children, and, where there is no surviving spouse or issue, others who would be entitled to the property of the person who died. Certain dependents, including a putative spouse, stepchildren, or parents who were financially dependent, may also qualify.
A wrongful death claim compensates surviving family members for their own losses, including financial support, funeral and burial expenses, and the loss of the companionship, guidance, and society the person provided.
A separate claim, called a survival action, covers losses the person themselves sustained before death, such as medical expenses and lost earnings. California law changed here. For survival actions filed on or after January 1, 2026, damages for the decedent’s own pain, suffering, or disfigurement are no longer recoverable. Cases filed before that date are not affected, and different rules can apply in elder abuse matters.
Eligibility depends on family circumstances, filing deadlines are strict, and the damages available depend in part on when a case is filed.
Reporting requirements after a California collision
California imposes reporting duties on drivers that are separate from any insurance claim.
A report must be filed with the DMV on form SR-1 within ten days of a collision that caused any injury, any death, or more than one thousand dollars in property damage to any one person. This duty applies regardless of fault, applies even when police responded and wrote their own report, and is not satisfied by notifying an insurance company. With current repair costs, most collisions that involve a body shop meet the damage threshold.
A separate rule covers collisions causing injury or death. The driver must make a written report to the California Highway Patrol, or to the city police department where the collision happened in a city, within twenty four hours. The statute states this duty for every injury or fatal collision. In practice, where officers responded and completed a report at the scene, that report generally satisfies the agency’s need, but a driver who assumes this without confirming it is relying on practice rather than on the text of the law.
Missing the DMV deadline can lead to suspension of driving privileges, an outcome unrelated to who caused the collision.
