INDUSTRY, Calif. (KABC) —A 12-year-old was killed and another person hospitalized after a wrong-way crash Wednesday morning on the 60 Freeway in the City of Industry, authorities said.
The incident occurred about 5 a.m. near Crossroads Parkway and initially forced the closure of all westbound lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol. All lanes have now reopened.
One vehicle was going the wrong way on the 60 Freeway, causing the accident, a CHP official said.
The driver, who has been unidentified but was driving a Hyundai Sedan, was initially going the correct direction westbound when they were involved in a collision with a big rig west of Crossroads Parkway. After the first collision, the driver fled the scene and began driving eastbound in the westbound lane, causing the deadly wrong-way collision.
The wrong-way collision was head-on and involved five vehicles in total.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle fled the crash scene on foot and remains outstanding.
There is no other information on the suspect other than that they were driving the Hyundai Sedan.
Despite life-saving measures attempted, a female girl from another vehicle involved in the second crash was pronounced dead at the scene. The girl was 12 years old, but officials had earlier stated she was 11.
A second person was transported to a hospital in unknown condition.
