Michael Spears has been arrested in connection with a crash at Elise Avenue and Power Inn Road that killed a 35-year-old local woman and seriously injured a 4-year-old.
Sacramento, CA, June 2, 2022 — Veronica Vargas has been identified by authorities as the deceased victim in an alleged DUI two-vehicle collision that occurred on May 26 in Sacramento. Michael Spears has been arrested in connection with the deadly crash. Veronica Vargas, a 35-year-old local resident, was driving a Ford Explorer with a 4-year-old girl as a passenger. At some time prior to 8:30 a.m., information attributed to the California Highway Patrol alleges that the driver of pickup, 32-year-old Elk Grove resident Michael Spears, was driving a Chevrolet 3500 pickup truck recklessly. Authorities charge that it sped through the a red-light, causing the devastating collision. First-responders arrived but Veronica Vargas tragically died from her injuries. The 4-year-old was brought to the hospital with injuries described as serious. Meanwhile, authorities allege that Michael Spears – who allegedly was driving on a suspended license — attempted to leave the scene but was prevented from doing so by bystanders. He was soon arrested on charges that included vehicular manslaughter, DUI, and hit-and-run. Nevertheless, the investigation into the deadly collision remains underway.
