Richard Henkel has been identified by authorities as the victim in an apparent hit-and-run collision that occurred on August 4 in San Diego. Mr. Henkel, who is described as a 52-year-old homeless man, was found prior to 11:30 p.m. It appears he had attempted to cross an off-ramp from the 5 Freeway and was struck. The driver continued driving without attempting to help. First responders arrived in response to a bystander’s phone call and took the man to an area hospital, where he later perished from his injuries. A witness spotted a white Volkswagen Passat, which was tracked by San Diego police. An individual has been arrested in the case.
