Jovan Cortez, age 21, has been arrested on multiple charges including DUI and vehicular manslaughter in connection with a crash that killed a man and his 7-year-old son.
Fresno County, CA, May 3, 2021 — Jose Castillo and Jose Castillo Jr., age 7, have been identified by authorities as the deceased victims in an alleged DUI collision that occurred on May 1 Fresno County. Jovan Adam Cortez has been arrested in connection with the tragic crash. Jose Castillo, a 45-year-old Fresno resident, was driving a Cadillac Escalade on West North Avenue with his young son, his wife, and three other children at about 8:00 p.m. According to reports attributed to the California Highway Patrol, when the Castillo family’s car entered the intersection with Marks Avenue, a Dodge pickup truck driven by Jovan Cortez, age 21, allegedly ran through a red light and violently collided with their vehicle. The force of the crash ejected Jose Castillo and his 7-year-old son, causing their death. Three others were injured, at least one seriously and taken for medical treatment. Also seriously injured, Jovan Cortez was taken for treatment. The man was driving with his infant daughter in a car-seat and was fortunately uninjured, according to reports. Authorities determined that Jovan Cortez was intoxicated at the time of the crash and have arrested him on multiple charges including DUI and vehicular homicide. The investigation into the horrific crash remains underway.
