Eugene Harbrecht has been identified by authorities the deceased in an alleged street racing and DUI collision that occurred on July 30 in Santa Ana. Mr. Harbrecht, a 67-year-old local resident and a veteran journalist with the Orange County Register, was driving a Ford Ranger pickup truck in the vicinity of Bristol Street and Santa Clara Avenue at roughly 11:45 p.m. when he was hit by a vehicle described as a silver BMW allegedly driven by Louie Robert Villa, 29. Mr. Villa was allegedly racing Ricardo Navarro, 24. Both young men are Santa Ana residents. Mr. Harbrecht was trapped in his vehicle which later burst into flames from the impacted, extracted by bystanders, and taken to UCI Medical Center by first responders, where he sadly died from his injuries. Mr. Villas was also seriously injured. He was later charged with vehicular manslaughter during a DUI. Mr. Navarro allegedly fled the scene of the accident but was located and arrested for vehicular manslaughter. An investigation is ongoing.
