Driver arrested after leaving the scene of a fatal collision in Merced

On August 1, 2020, at 6:50 P.M. the Merced Police Department responded to the 900 block of V Street for a fatal collision.

The driver, identified as 22-year-old Luis Rodriguez Amezcua was driving a Black 2014 Camaro westbound on 9th Street and failed to stop at the posted stop sign, colliding into two vehicles.

Witnesses said Amezcua was driving at a high rate of speed, failing to slow down for the stop sign.

Amezcua initially fled the scene leaving behind his two passengers, witnesses directed officers to him one block away from the scene.

One passenger, a Hispanic male adult was flown to a Modesto hospital with major injuries, the other passenger, a Hispanic male adult was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The occupants of the other two vehicles only sustained minor injuries.

While speaking with Amezcua, the Officers noticed he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Amezcua was ultimately arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, vehicular manslaughter and hit and run.

V street remains closed due to PG&E working on two damaged, the  estimated time to reopen is at approximately 6:00
