Carol Sanchez has been identified by authorities as a victim in a pedestrian collision which happened on March 20 in Merced. Ms. Sanchez had been stopped on Highway 99 shortly after 8:30 p.m. by California Highway Patrol officers on suspicion of driving under the influence. The officer reportedly stopped the woman and walked away to contact another officer after allegedly smelling alcohol. The woman also apparently had prior DUI charges on her record. Trying to escape, Ms. Sanchez ran across the highway. The 26-year-old resident was struck by the Honda driven by Mirelez Alyssa, 22, which was in turn struck by another Honda driven by Xiong Mai, 25. Ms. Sanchez died at the scene. All parties in the accident were Merced residents. The tragic incident is under investigation.
