A 44-year-old local man died and at least three others were injured in a collision involving a Honda sedan and a Peterbilt big-rig at the intersection of Philbric Road and Betteravia Road.
Santa Maria, CA– Alberto Gonzalez-Lopez has been identified by authorities as the deceased victim in a car and truck collision that occurred on May 2 in Santa Maria. Alberto Gonzalez-Lopez, a 44-year-old local resident, was one of at least two passengers in a Honda sedan driven by 32-year-old Domingo Perez Lopez, also a Santa Maria resident, heading south on Philbric Road when the incident began. At the same time, a Peterbilt semi-truck was heading west on Betteravia Road. The driver was Fidel Gomes Reyes, 64 and also a local Santa Maria resident. When the Honda came to a stop sign at the intersection of the two streets, authorities say Domingo Lopez turned left from Philbric onto Betteravia. The truck driver reportedly did not have a stop sign and the two vehicles collided at about 6:30 a.m., authorities say. The truck struck the left side of the Honda, where Alberto Gonzalez-Lopez was sitting in the back seat. The big-rig trick reportedly went off of the road, struck a pole and then a fence, causing it to overturn. First-responders arrived but Alberto Gonzalez-Lopez died at the scene. Both drivers and a second passenger in the Honda, Santa Maria resident Servillan Perez Lopez, were taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with injuries described as both major and moderate. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the tragic mishap.
